Entering African markets: five questions to answer first

Africa is not one market. Companies that succeed treat entry as a sequence of specific bets, each tested against local realities.

Interest in African growth is rising among global and regional companies alike. The opportunity is real, but so is the gap between headline market size and revenue a company can actually capture.

Five questions

  1. Which customers, specifically? Size the segment you can serve at a price that works, not the total population.
  2. Which markets first? Rank countries on reachable demand, ease of operating and strategic fit, then sequence them.
  3. Build, partner or buy? Local partners and acquisitions can accelerate entry, but the governance has to be right from day one.
  4. How will you reach the customer? Distribution, payments and after-sales often matter more than the product itself.
  5. What could go wrong? Map currency, regulatory and counterparty risks and decide in advance how you will respond.

Test before you scale

The strongest entries start with a focused beachhead, prove the model, then expand. Ambition is an asset. Sequencing turns it into returns.
